SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Senate committee has approved a measure that would turn Utah State Valley College into a university.
Senate Bill 70 passed today with a 5-to-1 vote. Under the bill, the school's new name would be Utah Valley University.
Although the measure is sponsored by Senate President John Valentine, it also has about two dozen co-sponsors. The Orem Republican says the name change would cost about $10 million to increase the number of full-time faculty members, establish graduate programs and enhance student services.
If it passes, the bill would take effect on July first.
The measure now moves to the full Senate for debate.
