WEST VALLEY CITY -- A pit bull attacked a 5-year-old boy in West Valley City Friday afternoon, and the child went to the hospital with head injuries.

Police said the dog bit the boy on his face and head during an encounter on the street near 3000 South and Rae Street. An officer told KSL the boy lives across the street from the dog's owner.

The owner said he was not home at the time of the attack, but claims the dog was on a leash, in a kennel and behind fences. He said his roommates told him the boy had harassed the dog.

Police said no one witnessed the attack.

Animal control officers have the dog.
