SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake Valley Health Department (SLVHD) expects the first shipment of the H1N1 flu vaccine next week.
However, the shipment will only be in the nasal spray form and there will only be approximately 11,000 doses.
This first shipment is reserved for individuals ages 2-24, adults who care for children less than six months old and health care, paramedics or EMTs up to 49 years old. Those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women are not eligible for the nasal spray. They will need to wait for the injectable vaccine.
The first shipment of the vaccine will be available at the Salt Lake Valley Health Department's four major clinics:
- South Main Public Health Center
3690 South Main Street
Salt Lake City, Utah 84115 - Ellis R. Shipp Public Health Center
4535 South 5600 West
West Valley City, Utah 84120 - Salt Lake City Public Health Center
610 South 200 East
Salt Lake City, Utah 84111 - Southeast Public Health Center
9340 South 700 East
Sandy, Utah 84070
More providers will be added in the coming weeks as more flu vaccine becomes available.
SLVHD expects to continue to receive H1N1 vaccine, including the injectable vaccine, regularly throughout the flu season.
SLVHD recommends getting the seasonal flu vaccine, which is currently available, and the H1N1 vaccine since the seasonal flu vaccine is unlikely to provide protection against H1N1. They are intended to be used alongside each other.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the 2009-10 flu season officially begins Oct. 4.
