SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- As the economic slump sends more students back to school, registration at Salt Lake Community College is surging.
Officials expect record-setting enrollment when fall classes start Wednesday.
College spokesman Joy Tlou says that on Monday registrations were up 18 percent from a year earlier.
To accommodate at least 3,000 new students, officials hired up to 200 part-time adjunct faculty using federal stimulus money. Vice President for Instruction Joe Peterson says hiring was done in English, biology, math and communication.
Utah Valley University in Orem also is preparing for a big increase that could bring the student population to nearly 30,000. UVU spokesman Chris Taylor says the school is going on eight consecutive semesters with increases.
