MENDON, Utah (AP) -- A well in Cache County has been shut down because of high nitrate levels.

Ken Bousfield of the state Department of Environmental Quality says a sample from the well showed a nitrate level of 11.6 parts per million. The federal standard maximum for drinking water is 10 ppm.

The well serves about 40 homes.

Although the well's level tested over the federal standard, Bousfield said the amount shouldn't be cause for alarm.

Mayor Mike Morgan says he hopes the closed well will get the state to move faster on an application to drill a new one.
