Reaction today from our state and nation's leaders.

Former President George Bush, Sr: "He gave me a great assignment of being which was equivalent to Ambassador in China. Before that he was our Leader in the House of Representatives and was one of the most decent and honorable men I have ever met in my life."

Former President Jimmy Carter, the man who defeated him in the 1976 presidential election: "...An outstanding statesman, he wisely chose the path of healing during a deeply divisive time in our nation's history."

Senator Bob Bennett: "He was a man of great integrity, and led this country with distinction during a very trying and divisive period."

Sen. Orrin Hatch: "President Ford was incredibly gutsy, yet also one of the most decent, honorable, and nicest men that I have ever known."

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: "Gerald R. Ford lived a life of service to others, doing so with kindness, firmness of conviction, and an unwavering sense of right. He will always be remembered as a man of faith and decency."

Gerald Ford, himself, taken from a 1999 interview: "So when I became president, I tried to restore public confidence and trust in the White House. I think I did. I hope that's what historians will write about some 50 years down the road."
