GUNNISON, Sanpete County — Two inmates at the Central Utah Correctional Facility have been charged with attempted murder for their alleged roles in a large fight.

Santiago de los Sant Ramos, 55, and Juan Valencia, 37, were each charged in 6th District Court with attempted murder, a second-degree felony.

Not many details about the incident on Sept. 2 have been released. Sanpete County Attorney Kevin Daniels says there was a fight involving at least eight inmates at the prison. Some of the inmates were armed with shanks, makeshift knives and even hot water, he said.

Ramos and Valencia were charged with attempted murder for their alleged roles in the brawl. Information on injuries was not immediately available. Each inmate was serving time for convictions on theft-related charges at the time of the fight.
