SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Logan officials say an emergency response and cleanup effort following a canal collapse and mud slide that left three dead cost the city $333,842.
A spreadsheet of city expenses provided to The Salt Lake Tribune shows roughly one-third of the costs were for operating large equipment such as backhoes and dump trucks, some of which were privately owned. The city's public works department accounted for another one-third of expenses.
The remainder went to police, fire and other city employee expenses, including food and other supplies.
The largest line item -- $37,800 -- was for 30 firefighters who worked over the July 11-12 weekend.
The Logan Northern Canal broke July 11, wiping out one home and killing the family inside. Area residents were evacuated and kept out for about four days.
