SALT LAKE CITY -- The government is worried about a common drug we use to fight the common cold. FDA officials say Zicam can cause a person to lose their sense of smell.
The Zicam Web site says the company is voluntarily withdrawing its cold remedy nasal gel and swabs for adults and kids, but it says the FDA's actions are unwarranted and their products are safe.
Mary Ann Brandon disagrees. "I sprayed it one time in each nostril, and within 30 minutes my husband and I were on the way to the emergency room. I felt like my face was on fire," she said.
The FDA says it decided to advise consumers not to use Zicam after 130 people using the product reported losing their sense of smell. [CLICK HERE to read more about the FDA's warning]
