ROY -- A 54-year-old woman was killed Wednesday evening when a vehicle veered off the road in her Roy neighborhood and hit her. Wendy Kerbs was outside of her home gardening with her husband when the accident happened.
"First swerve he was sideways, the second one snapped back around, and on the third one was a barrel roll down the street into the telephone poll," said witness Jack Deschner.
Richard Bash Roy police say the driver of the SUV was 40-year-old Richard Bash. He and another car were driving about 50 to 60 miles per hour northbound on 3100 West near 5800 South. Neighbors say it looked like they were either racing or maybe it was some sort of road rage incident.
The other car, described as a white or red sporty-looking car, fled the scene. Police say Bash got out of his vehicle after the accident and attempted to break into some homes, perhaps in an effort to get away. He was eventually arrested in a field nearby a short time later.
Neighbors are extremely upset and angry about what happened. Many of them knew Kerbs very well.
"That's my friend. I work with her, literally. So, it's ugly, just absolutely ugly. There's no call for this," Deschner said.
Neighbor Patsy McMillen said, "Wendy has lived here as long as I can remember -- for at least 20,25 years -- since I've been here. She is just the kindest lady. She would do anything for you. She's raised a couple of kids, and my kids went to high school with her kids; and just nice people."
Investigators are still trying figure out what these drivers were doing. They think that perhaps alcohol may have been involved, but all charges are still pending at this time. Their No. 1 priority is locating the other vehicle involved. They're hoping that somebody will come forward and provide some information.
