SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A convicted murder who absconded from parole has been arrested at a homeless shelter in Redding, Calif.
U.S. Marshals supervising deputy Carolyn Griffin says officers took Howard Augusta Scott into custody Wednesday. He's now in the Shasta County, Calif., Jail awaiting extradition back to Utah.
Scott was convicted in 1980 for the kidnapping and murder of 54-year-old Ernest O. Sprinkle near Salina. Scott and another man were hitchhiking in California when Sprinkle offered them a ride. Sprinkle was later found in the bathroom of his motor home with two bullets in the chest.
Scott was released from the Utah State Prison in 2006 and absconded from parole in November 2008.
When he returns to Utah, Scott will face two prison terms of five years to life.
