Jordan district taps reserves for teacher pay

By Randall JeppesenThe Jordan School District says it's going to have to tap into its reserve funds to keep teachers from getting salary cuts this year.

For now, the state has cut about $76 million from public education. Spokeswoman Melinda Colton says the Jordan School District wanted to make sure teachers know their salaries are safe, for now. [Click here to read the statement Jordan District gave to its teachers]

"We reassured employees to let them know that we will use our reserve," she said.

But the district says the reserve money it will use is a short-term fix for this year. "Some very big decisions, some very tough priorities to have to set and make as the next school year begins," Colton said.

The Jordan District will face even more challenges as it splits.
