SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A state lawmaker is proposing a bill that would reduce referendum titles appearing on the ballot from 100 words to 75.

Rep. Keith Grover, R-Provo, says he's proposing the legislation to make ballot language more understandable.

Election officials say the change also could lower election costs by potentially reducing the number of pages required for paper ballots.

Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen says people read through ballot titles quickly and she thinks 75 words will be enough.
