WEST VALLEY CITY — A man is dead after police say he fired a gun at a crowd of people early Saturday morning, and someone in the crowd fired back.
At approximately 12:40 a.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 4700 block of Palmer Drive, where a Halloween party attended by teenagers and young adults was being held, according to a statement from the West Valley City Police Department.
The statement says Allen Montelongo, 18, of Salt Lake City, was driving by the party and fired at a group of people standing in the roadway. A 16-year-old male from Sandy was hit multiple times by the gunfire, according to police.
Someone in the group returned fire, police said, hitting Montelongo and causing him to crash his car into a fence. He was later pronounced dead on scene.
The injured juvenile was taken to a hospital for treatment and was expected to survive, the police statement says.
Marci Bonham, who lives nearby, told KSL-TV the group heard several popping noises, and then "what sounded like garbage cans rolling over."
Bonham said she also saw a body lying outside the crashed vehicle.
"There was a group of younger girls screaming and upset," she said. "You could hear them saying that they wanted to help, and then some were saying, 'No, we got to get out of here.'"
Police say the shooting appears to be a targeted incident and "all relevant parties have been identified." Police did not say if anyone else had been arrested.
"It was kind of disturbing to think that a bullet could come flying, hit your house, hit you as well," Bonham said. "There's too much violence, too much gun violence."
