SALT LAKE CITY — A Tooele County man who police say got knocked down during a fight is accused of firing more than a dozen rounds at the man who punched him, killing him.
"The defendant brought a firearm to a fist fight. The defendant had no regard for the safety and welfare of others or the community," prosecutors stated in charging documents.
Cesar Gonzalez Juarez, 24, of Stansbury Park, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with murder and three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree felonies; plus an additional 10 counts of illegal shooting of a gun, a third-degree felony.
Salt Lake City police responded to a shooting near 1300 E. Wilson Avenue (1760 South) on Sept. 6 and found 20-year-old Usman Dalal "lying in the middle of the street with multiple gunshot wounds," according to charging documents.
Investigators learned that Dalal was walking to a party with friends when several people in a car drove by and words were exchanged, according to charging documents.
"(Gonzalez) got out of the vehicle, and a physical fight ensued. When (Gonzalez) was punched and knocked to the ground, he got up, removed his handgun from his waistband and fired it, believing to have struck the victim with at least one shot. As the victim was running away from (Gonzalez), another occupant of the vehicle tackled the victim, and punched and kicked the victim while he was on the ground," the charges state.
That's when Gonzalez walked up to Dalal and fired several more rounds at him, according to the charges.
Police say Gonzalez claimed he was acting in self-defense "and fired (his gun) at the individual until he was out of ammunition," the charges state.
Detectives recovered 12 shell casings in the street, two more on the lawn and one live round.
