SALT LAKE CITY — Dozens of Utah law enforcement agencies are now in compliance with a new state law following a report by the KSL Investigators.
A law passed by the Utah Legislature in 2024 requires law enforcement agencies to submit data on sexual assault cases from the prior calendar year to the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice by April 30, starting in 2025. That data includes information such as the number of sexual assaults reported to the agency and the number of those cases referred for prosecution.
The commission is then tasked with creating and releasing a report on the data for lawmakers and the public.
The KSL Investigators have reported extensively on challenges in Utah when it comes to addressing sexual assault, finding in 2021 that sexual assault cases here are poorly tracked and under-prosecuted.
In May, KSL reported that a majority of law enforcement agencies in Utah had failed to provide their data. According to the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, only 25 agencies had submitted the required data as of May 29 — 22% of Utah's 116 agencies.
Nearly a month later, the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice said it has now received data from 75 agencies as of June 23 — boosting compliance to 65% among Utah's law enforcement agencies.
"Since this is a new requirement, we are working closely with the remaining agencies to ensure that their questions are addressed and that this information is sent to us in a timely manner," data coordinator Angelo Perillo said. "As a result, the total number of participating agencies is growing steadily."
The public report on the data is due in August.
