SOUTH JORDAN — The residents at Legacy Retirement Residence were given a special treat Thursday. A fashion show made up of staff, residents and their family members made for a magical afternoon just in time for Mother's Day.
The tradition began with marketing director Leilani Palmer in 2005.
"I thought it would be fun to have a fashion show for our residents to show off themselves and express their fashion. Every year, right before Mother's Day, we do this," Palmer said.
Before the big day, retirement home residents shop for their perfect outfit.
"My favorite part was going and buying our new clothes. We went to (J.C.) Penny's and got to pick out what we wanted. We even got a discount," said Legacy resident Gloria Mackey. "Everyone is so nice at Legacy. We have such fun activities."
Many residents had a history of fashion or a love for clothing. The trip was a fantastic experience for them, as they hit the town and bonded with friends.
"We took a lot of them shopping. They walk around, look at the dresses, and we will say 'yay' or 'nay.' They will tell us what they like," Palmer laughed. "I think it is good for seniors to stay young and to have a personal connection. I don't think that because you're a senior you have to think you are old; you can still be young at heart."
Legacy was decked out with pink balloons, flowers and a catwalk adorned with lights. Residents each had their turn walking down the runway, posing and showing off their outfits. The energy was electric, with residents cheering on their friends, loving the outfits and taking photos.
Outfits included elaborate dresses, vacation clothes, summer-inspired looks and a rodeo ensemble. Palmer announced each outfit as each participant came out, and she told a bit about the inspiration behind the look.
The facility is known for hosting fun activities and helping residents remain engaged in the community. To help with the activities, Sharlene Wells with Mountain America presented the retirement home with $500.
"We do a weekly Pay It Forward, focusing on any kind of organization that is looking for ways to make a difference in the community," Wells, a former Miss America, explained. "This is one of my favorite things I get to do. We get to look for people who are doing great things like this. The joy that they bring through this event is amazing. I have never seen a cuter fashion show."
The event ended with a raffle where residents could win candy, flowers and assorted gift cards.
Residents loved the event and look forward to it every year, as it helps to make Mother's Day a little more special.
