ST. GEORGE — The paved trail blends in with the landscape, meandering through red stone and desert foliage interspersed with stories of the past. Markers lead visitors through moments in time, telling tales of those who built the "diamond in the desert" — the city of St. George.
The city continued its weeklong Dixie Days celebration with a ribbon cutting at Pioneer Park, commemorating the opening of the Pioneer Park Interpretive Trail. Around 100 or more people gathered on the trail's west side for the event, which featured multiple speakers, guided hikes and refreshments.
The paved, half-mile trail connects one of the city's most popular parks, Pioneer Park, with the Red Hills Desert Garden to the east and features information signs, shade structures, benches and views of the city below. Shane Moore, the city's parks and community services director, said the new trail will "allow more accessibility than ever before to this incredible place."
"If you have somebody in a wheelchair, if you have somebody in a stroller, you're able to really bring them up and let them experience and see the views and the red rocks and just feel the incredible vibe that we have up here," he said.
