KEARNS — The search continued Monday for a man who police say opened fire on another man in a crowded park where more than 100 adults and children were present.

About 8:40 p.m. Sunday at Oquirrh Park, 5624 S. Cougar Lane (4800 West) next to the Utah Olympic Oval, two large parties were being held. At one point, police say a couple of men ended up going to public restrooms, where they got into a confrontation with other men.

Information on how many people were involved in the confrontation and what the initial argument was about is still under investigation, said Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race.

At one point, however, a man pulled out a gun and shot another man three times. The victim was hit in the shoulder and cheek, and one shot grazed his head, Race said. That man was taken to a local hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, she said. No other information was provided about the victim.

After the man was shot, one of his friends pulled out his own gun and returned fire on the original gunman, Race said. It was not immediately known how many shots he fired or if hit the gunman. The gunman ran from the park. The man who shot back remained on scene for police to arrive. He was not arrested.

Anyone with information on the shooter is asked to call police at 801-840-4000.
