SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Fire Department is responding to two gas leaks on Thursday afternoon, both of which impacted the communities around them.

The fire department told residents to expect delays around both gas leaks.

"These closures could last for several hours," a statement on the social platform X said.

Sugar House gas leak

One gas leak around 1600 East and 2100 South in Sugar House led to a shutdown of 2100 South between 1300 East and 1800 East.

Public utilities officials announced about 5:45 p.m. that 2100 South between 1500 East and 1700 East had reopened to drivers. Sugar House Park was reopened as well after it closed to the public.

"Thanks to crews for their quick response to mitigate this incident!" the post said.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department said residents near the leak were evacuated, and they expected the evacuation to last until about 3 p.m. As of 6 p.m., updates on the evacuation were not immediately available, and the department did not respond to a request for comment. Fire officials said they would use X to let residents know when they can return.

Highland High School was accessible from the east only, another post on X said.

State Street

The other gas leak is impacting traffic in all directions near 700 South and State Street in Salt Lake City.

Emergency utility work is affecting both directions of State Street, and the road will be closed until the work is complete, according to a post from the Utah Department of Transportation.

About 2:15 p.m., the Salt Lake City Fire Department said State Street will be opening, but 700 South will remain closed while Dominion Energy repairs the line. It said the fire department is no longer needed at the scene.
