ORMOND BEACH, Florida — Great teamwork by first responders helped save Christmas for a family after their car crashed earlier this week.
The car went off a highway, struck a pole, rolled, and ended up in a ditch with about three feet of water in Volusia County, Florida, on Christmas morning. A woman and her three young kids were inside. They weren't seriously hurt but were taken to a local hospital.
"Unfortunately, all of the children's Christmas gifts were in the (submerged) vehicle," the Volusia Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
Firefighters and deputies jumped into action. Body camera video shows they used a ladder to access the sunken car and formed a human chain to salvage the soaked gifts, one by one.
Deputies took the presents to the sheriff's office, dried them out, added a few extra gifts, then delivered them to the family's children at the hospital.
One online commenter called this "by far the best story" they've heard in a long time. Others said, "Amazing job. Way to go above and beyond!"
