THE HALLWAY — A baby's first words are always a big deal. In fact, I could probably tell you right now what all my three kids' first words were. The easiest to remember was my youngest son, who looked up one day and shocked us all by saying, "pterodactyl."
While the names of dinosaurs aren't usually the first word, other names definitely make the list of the most common first words for babies. Here's a sample list for reference:
- Mama
- Dada
- Papa
- Ball
- Bye
- Uh-oh
- Hi
- No
- Dog
- Bottle
- Baby
- Banana
I did a little research, and it seems that in most countries, babies' first words are variations of "mama." Usually, "dada" isn't close behind. And, for some reason, the first word in Australia is often "jam."
Anyhow, this little video highlights the competitiveness that can sometimes arise when a baby's first word isn't the one you want to hear:
This eight-month-old is definitely locked in on her favorite sound. And I love how the dad appears in the video's background just long enough to confirm that he's still the word of choice. When you can beat out contenders like "mama," "jam," and "pterodactyl," you know you're doing something right.
