WEST VALLEY CITY — Several juveniles and a Florida man were detained over the weekend following a vehicle shootout in which one teenager was hurt and a family living nearby narrowly missed being shot.

Police said a bullet entered a window of a house near 2833 S. 2700 West, went through a headboard of a bed and lodged in a wall, narrowly missing a 3-year-old child, a mom and a dad who were on the bed a foot below where the bullet hit.

The incident started Friday when Nadiel Alexander Arroyo, 18, who was visiting from Florida, went to his cousin's house, the police affidavit says. Arroyo told police that at about 11 p.m., he agreed to go to a party at "Black Candy."

At the party, an acquaintance told Arroyo there was a fight in the parking lot and a woman who was with them at the party was jumped, so they needed to go outside to help. The affidavit said Arroyo left the party and saw a lot of people outside so he tried to go back inside, but the bouncer wouldn't let him.

Another friend of Arroyo's told him it was time to leave and he got into the back seat of a blue vehicle with them. As the car was leaving, Arroyo said a red vehicle was following them at a fast speed, the affidavit says, and while at a traffic light, the red car turned and blocked their car.

The affidavit says a man in the red vehicle rolled down the window and pointed a gun at Arroyo and the other occupants of the blue car. The blue car tried to drive away and the red car flipped around and crashed into a telephone pole on the opposite side of the road, police said.

Police said Arroyo told them two men jumped out of the red car and started shooting at him. The affidavit says Arroyo grabbed a gun that was on the floorboard next to him, pointed it out the window to the sky and fired two to three shots to "deter the other males from shooting."

One man from the red car was hit by bullets, "paralyzing him," the affidavit states. Further details on that man's condition were not available Monday.

Police said a house in the direction of Arroyo's shots was also hit, sending the bullet through the headboard above the family.

Police said officers responded to the shooting just after 4 a.m. Saturday and found the red Hyundai crashed into a pole at 2833 S. 2700 West.

Officers said there were "several juveniles" on scene, including a 17-year-old boy who had been driving the car and was shot in the arm and side. The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment. It is unclear if this boy was the same person as the man from the red car who was hit.

Arroyo was arrested for investigation of discharge of a weapon and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

All occupants from both vehicles were detained, the affidavit says. It is unclear how many people were involved.
