MILLCREEK — A burning semitruck forced the closure of westbound Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon for about 45 minutes on Monday afternoon, Unified Fire Authority Capt. Jennifer Bevan said, which led to ongoing traffic delays into the evening.
The fire happened about four miles east of Millcreek on I-80; the Utah Department of Transportation expected the incident to be cleared by 8:45 p.m. to ease the long delays.
"It took a while for them to put it out just because of water issues," Bevan said, citing the difficulty of getting a supply of water up the canyon to extinguish the blaze.
Once the water supply arrived the fire crews were able to put out the fire "pretty fast," Bevan said.
The semitruck was full of frozen food. The driver was the only one in the semitruck and was not injured.
Unified Fire Authority and the South Salt Lake Fire Department responded to the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Bevan confirmed.
