CENTERVILLE — A fatal hit-and-run crash between a cyclist and truck in Centerville ended with the driver dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in West Bountiful Saturday, police said.
About 11:18 p.m., police responded to a hit-and-run crash between a truck and a cyclist near 600 S. Frontage Road. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified as Kevin Reed Jessop, 63, of Bountiful.
Witnesses informed police that a Toyota Tundra had fled the scene following the crash. Based on vehicle descriptions by witnesses, police went to the West Bountiful home of Justin Dewayne Bennett, 43, and noticed "vehicle pieces" on the ground outside the home at 1359 N. 600 West, Centerville Police Lt. Allen Ackerson said in a statement.
"Officers then briefly made contact with Bennett outside his home. Bennet fled into his home, and a single gunshot was then heard by officers coming from inside the home," Ackerson said.
Officers remained outside until a search warrant was obtained, then they entered and found Bennett dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the lieutenant said.
The truck involved in the hit-and-run was found inside Bennett's garage, he said, adding that the circumstances leading up to the collision with the bicyclist is still under investigation.
Bennett's death is being investigated by Centerville and West Bountiful police.
