SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man already facing charges of assaulting a police officer has been arrested again and accused of fighting with two other officers and trying to grab both of their guns.
On Tuesday, Cameron Michael Ward, 25, "came dangerously close to removing a firearm from two peace officers, which would have likely resulted in death or serious injury," according to a police booking affidavit.
South Salt Lake police were conducting an investigation near 136 W. 3300 South when they said Ward approached them.
"Cameron was yelling in a public place and covered in blood. Cameron appeared to be agitated and began to approach me, coming within feet of me," an officer wrote in the affidavit.
The officer attempted to get Ward to sit on a street curb, but he refused. When the officer attempted to place Ward in handcuffs, "Cameron began to punch me in the face. While on the ground trying to subdue Cameron he grabbed onto my firearm with his left hand and began to pull on it," according to the officer.
A second officer arrived on the scene to help and was kicked in the stomach by Ward, the affidavit states.
"Cameron also grabbed onto another officer's firearm and began to pull on it and ignored several commands to stop trying to remove the firearm," police said.
After eventually restraining Ward, he was arrested for investigation of two counts of disarming a police officer, two counts of assaulting an officer, and interfering with an officer.
In July, Ward was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer in a separate investigation. In that case, Ward fought with a Unified police officer in July near 8000 S. State, according to charging documents. During the struggle, police say Ward bit the officer's hand and caused the back of the officer's head to hit the sidewalk, giving the officer a concussion. A warrant was issued for Ward's arrest in that case on Dec. 13 after he failed to show up to court.
