TOOELE — Police have identified a man who they say was beaten to death by his roommate last week. The roommate then went back to bed and was arrested after officers woke him up, officials said.

James Stockmoe, 60, of Tooele, was found at about 2:25 a.m. Thursday on the floor of his basement apartment by his girlfriend who had just gotten off of work, according to police. He had extensive injuries to his face. Despite life-saving efforts, Stockmoe was pronounced dead at the scene.

When the girlfriend called 911, she told emergency dispatchers it appeared Stockmoe had been beaten, according to a police booking affidavit.

After officers arrived, they searched the rest of the apartment and reported finding Richard Perales, 55, asleep on his bed.

On Friday, Perales was charged in 3rd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony; and domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony, after it was discovered that a boy in the upstairs apartment heard the assault.
