THE STADIUM — Miraculous things happen in sports arenas all the time, and even many non-sportsers love it.

Based just on past HYST? articles, it's not secret that I am someone who cares very little about sports. Yet, I still love a good sports highlight reel with amazing catches, shots and comebacks. I've even been known to become far too invested in based-on-a-true-story sports movies.

I was chanting "Rudy" in my heart with everyone else in the theater, I was holding my breath as Gene Hackman coached his high school Hoosiers to a heart-stopping state championship win, and men's Olympic hockey did make me believe in miracles.

Those moments are all about the feats that make sports history, but some feats are more about the personal win — and not necessarily from someone who is an actual member of a sports team.

In this video, a play-by-play minor league baseball announcer got his personal win a few years ago. While covering a High Point Rockers vs. Somerset Patriots game, Marc Schwartz observed a hum-drum, run-of-the-mill foul ball. Until it wasn't.

"Cardullo swings and fouls it off towards the broadcast booth," he says in a flat voice. "And I make the catch on the foul ball!" he continues with a little more enthusiasm but barely a pause in his commentary.

Sure, the crowd goes wild, but Schwartz goes wild on his own behalf with some well-deserved arm pumps and bragging.

"Boy, am I impressive," he finally says. And we would be "playing foul" if we disagreed. (Sorry not sorry about that glorious pun. On the plus side, you've just read my own personal sports win.)
