SALT LAKE CITY — If you have plans to travel this weekend, regardless of where you live, UDOT says drivers should plan ahead.
Heavier-than-usual traffic is anticipated in nearly every part of the state, due to college graduations and the Ironman World Championship in southern Utah.
Here is a breakdown on what to expect and where drivers should plan ahead, according to UDOT.
Wasatch Front (Salt Lake City to Cache Valley)
UDOT expected traffic to pick up on northbound I-15 between Salt Lake City and SR-30 in Box Elder County around 3 p.m. That is when the funeral procession for late Sen. Orrin Hatch departed Salt Lake City for his final resting place in Newton.
Additionally, city roads in Salt Lake City, Logan and Orem will be congested due to graduation ceremonies at the University of Utah, Utah State University and Utah Valley University.
Washington County
UDOT also expects heavy traffic in and around St. George all weekend due to the Ironman competition.
Beginning on Saturday, the Ironman event will have specific impact on state Route 9 between I-15 and Hurricane. It will also impact state Route 7 (Southern Parkway) and state Route 18 (Bluff Street) north of St. George Boulevard.
In addition, graduation at Dixie State University is also scheduled for this weekend.
UDOT also says travelers between I-15 and Zion National Park may consider using Exit 27 and state Route 17 through Toquerville as an alternative route.
It is also anticipated that there will be heavier-than-usual traffic between St. George and Las Vegas this weekend.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time. It is also advised to avoid these areas if possible.
