SANDY — A 28-year-old woman died following a head-on collision in Sandy on Sunday that forced the closure of eastbound traffic on 9400 South for hours.

The 28-year-old woman was driving an eastbound vehicle when a westbound vehicle crossed into her lane near 1700 East and collided with her head-on, Sandy Police Sgt. Clay Swensen said. Both drivers were transported to an area hospital, where the woman later died.

Police have not yet released the woman's identity.

The westbound driver was stable, Swensen said, but her exact condition was unknown Sunday night.

At 7:45 p.m., Sandy police tweeted about the crash and road closure saying eastbound lanes of the road "will be shut down from 1700 E to 1780 E for the next several hours while a fatal crash is investigated."

Sandy police are asking the public to avoid the area Sunday night.
