SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested for investigation of attempted murder and kidnapping after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, stabbed her, and drove her to a cemetery where he questioned her.
Albert Ishanti Givens, 32, was booked into Salt Lake County Metro Jail on Friday, court documents show.
Officers were dispatched to Inn Towne Suites, 151 W 7200 South, in Midvale on Thursday for an assault with a weapon. Salt Lake police learned that the woman had been stabbed at the inn and transported to University Hospital to be treated for her injuries.
According to court documents, the woman told officers that Givens had been using methamphetamine over the course of the last week. She indicated that Givens believed he was hearing voices and that people were listening to him.
"The Victim told Officer Hampton that at one point he pointed at the bed and told her to sit on it, and then mounted her while wielding a knife. The Victim said while on top of her, Albert held her down by her throat, hit her in the eye with the handle of the knife and told her, 'You're dead, I'm going to kill you' and then stabbed in her in the abdomen area," according to court documents.
Police observed physical injuries including bruising and a swollen eye, a stab wound to the lower left torso, and redness around her throat.
Following the assault, the woman told police that Givens made her leave the hotel to drive to a nearby cemetery where he questioned her. She said that when Givens didn't like her answers, he poked her in the leg with the knife.
Court documents said that Givens and the woman continued to drive around. The woman told police that at about 7 a.m. she attempted to get people's attention but wasn't successful.
Eventually, the woman was able to tell an employee at a business they went into that she needed help, and Salt Lake City police were called.
The knife, a towel used to control the bleeding, and a hoodie the woman said she was wearing when she was stabbed were booked into evidence by the Unified Police Department. The woman's car, where the knife and towel were found, was also towed as evidence.
Charges of domestic violence attempted homicide and domestic violence aggravated kidnapping are being screened against Givens at the 3rd District Court.
Givens previously faced charges in May and June 2020, some of which included aggravated exploitation of prostitution, assault, domestic violence in the presence of a child.
