SALT LAKE CITY — Commuters are beginning the week with snow and slick roads in parts of northern and central Utah.

A wave of snow moved in overnight, with snow sticking to roads in central Utah and north of the Salt Lake Valley, the KSL Traffic Center said.

From about 8 a.m. to about 11:30 a.m., traction laws were in effect for state Routes 210 and 190 in both Big and Little Cottonwood canyons, meaning that traction devices such as tire chains or four-wheel drive were required in those canyons, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Several crashes were reported in the Ogden area, but traffic was moving at regular speeds on freeways through Salt Lake and Utah counties. Utah Highway Patrol asked drivers to take it slow, observe a following distance over two seconds and slow down and move over for any first responders on the roads.

Snow showers are expected to come and go until the afternoon, KSL Meteorologist Grant Weyman said. The Northern Utah valleys can expect 1 to 3 inches of snow, with 3 to 5 inches in the central valleys. Up to 8 inches of new snow is expected in the northern mountains.
