PROVO — A man accused of shooting a BB gun into a group of people on the Brigham Young University campus on Sunday has been arrested, authorities said.

James "Jamie" Dunning was booked into the Utah County Jail late Monday night for investigation of three counts of aggravated assault, according to a news release from BYU police.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, a group of students were standing outside Helaman Halls at BYU when a white Nissan Rogue drove past, and several BB gun shots were fired. Three students were hit, and one was hit in the head above the ear, according to a jail report for Dunning. That student had to be taken to a hospital to have the projectile removed, the report said.

Investigators determined there were five people in the Nissan at the time, and all of them said Dunning owned the BB gun and had fired the shots at the group through an open car window, according to the jail report.

The driver of the car told police he yelled at Dunning to stop, but "Dunning was indifferent about shooting a BB gun into a group of people and not concerned by any possible injuries that may have been caused from his actions," the jail report said.

Another person who was in the car told police that Dunning had used the BB gun on him earlier in the evening, injuring his legs, according to the jail report.

The driver of the Nissan was concerned the BB gun had hit someone outside Helaman Halls, so he drove back to the area and saw that a group of people had gathered, the report states. A person from the group approached the car and said someone had been hit and injured by a BB gun.

The Nissan driver was concerned, but Dunning did not want to report the incident, so they left the area, according to the report.

Dunning later interviewed with police at the station, according to the report. During the interview, he admitted he had purchased the carbon dioxide-charged BB gun and that he had shot it into the group at Helaman Halls. He also admitted to police that the group in the Nissan learned that he had injured someone outside Helaman Halls, but none of them wanted to report the incident to police, the report said.

Dunning is on the Utah Valley University men's soccer team, UVU spokesman Scott Trotter confirmed. As of Tuesday morning, Dunning no longer appears on the team's roster on the UVU website.
