FARMINGTON — The Davis School District has approved a plan that will see its schools move away from the current hybrid model of instruction toward in-person classes most days a week.
According to KSL TV, elementary schools are slated to begin in-person learning four days a week on Monday, Sept. 28, while secondary schools will make the jump on Oct. 5. Under the "phase one" reopening plan, students will meet in person each Monday through Thursday and learn remotely on Fridays.
Currently, Davis students are attending classes in person two days a week and learning remotely three days a week to reduce class sizes amid the COVID-19 pandemic; some parents had rallied to restore full traditional instruction in the district.
The board heard from Davis parents before taking its vote. The ultimate "phase two" goal presented to the board is a return to full five-day instruction at a later time to be determined.
Assistant Superintendent John Zurbuchen said the health and safety of students and staff continues to be "foremost in our minds."
"From the start, the intention has been to use the hybrid school schedule as a bridge to a more traditional school schedule," Zurbuchen said. The district keeps track of COVID-19 case data in a dashboard on its website, data it used to inform the decision to move toward more in-person class. The dashboard says there were 36 total positive COVID-19 cases in 21 different schools from Sept. 5-11, and that no students were quarantined during that time.
