Help us thank this week's Unexpected Heroes — pharmacists and pharmacy techs

In a time when many people are thinking about their health more than ever amid the coronavirus pandemic, one group of essential employees is used to fielding questions about health and wellness. The friendly people in the white coats who make sure the right people get the right medication, help sick people find medicine or other means of relieving symptoms, and help us sort out the helpful from harmful health advice. They are the pharmacy technicians and pharmacists: this week's Unexpected Heroes. Pharmacists consult with people about their medications or help them find an over-the counter option to alleviate their symptoms. The pharmacy techs talk with customers, help fill prescriptions and manage inventory. We'd like to thank these workers and need your help to do so. — KSL.com staff

Logan closing some city facilities as COVID-19 cases spike

The Logan Library and community recreation center will close this week until further notice due to a current spike in COVID-19 cases in Cache County. The library will be closed starting Monday, and the rec center will shut down Tuesday, according to a Facebook post from the city. Masks will also be strongly encouraged for anyone visiting city offices starting Monday. People who prefer not to wear masks are asked to work with city employees over the phone or online. Last week, an outbreak was reported at a meat processing facility in the Bear River Health District, leading to a spike in cases in the area. “Be smart, be responsible, and be kind," Logan Mayor Holly Daines said in the Facebook post. "Please do not be complacent. I encourage residents to go back to basics and wear a mask when visiting a business, stay six feet away from others not in your household and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer often.” — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Utah sees 256 new cases of COVID-19, 3 new deaths

Though Utah's overall positive test rate for COVID-19 remains around 5%, where it has hovered for the entire pandemic, the positive rate in the last week has been double that, health officials reported Monday. Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 256 from Sunday, with three new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Monday's totals give Utah 12,322 total confirmed cases, with 918 total hospitalizations and 124 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 12,066 cases in the state. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Huntsman tests negative for COVID-19, but 2 more campaign staffers have virus

Former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., one of four Republican gubernatorial candidates on the June primary ballot, announced Monday he tested negative for COVID-19, but two more staffers have now tested positive for the virus. On Friday, Huntsman’s campaign said he had stopped making public appearances pending the results of a test taken after a member of his campaign staff tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Most stocks on Wall Street rise again on hopes for economy

Most stocks are rising on Wall Street as markets continue to ride the high supplied by Friday’s surprisingly encouraging report on the U.S. jobs market. The S&P 500 was up 0.4% in morning trading on Monday, bringing it back within 5.3% of its record set in February, as optimism strengthens that the worst of the coronavirus-induced recession may have already passed. Stocks that would benefit most from an economy that's growing again were rising the most, but pullbacks for a handful of big tech stalwarts were keeping the market's overall gains in check. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 248 points, or 0.9%, at 27,359, as of 10:52 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was up 0.2%. — Associated Press

New Zealand appears to have completely eradicated the coronavirus — at least for now — after health officials said Monday the last known infected person had recovered. The announcement was greeted with joy around the country and means the nation of 5 million people will be among the first to welcome throngs of fans back into sports stadiums, embrace crowded concerts and remove seating restrictions from flights. — Nick Perry, Associated Press
