SALT LAKE CITY — Former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., one of four Republican gubernatorial candidates on the June primary ballot, announced Monday he tested negative for COVID-19, but two more staffers have now tested positive for the virus.
On Friday, Huntsman’s campaign said he had stopped making public appearances pending the results of a test taken after a member of his campaign staff tested positive for the novel coronavirus. His campaign headquarters was also closed for cleaning.
Campaign manager Lisa Roskelley said two additional members of the campaign have tested positive while five, including Huntsman and herself, had negative test results. The campaign has not identified the staffers or their positions.
Roskelley said the campaign’s Salt Lake City headquarters has been reopened, but Huntsman continues to work from home while his family awaits their test results. She said his running mate, Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi, has not had recent contact with the affected staffers and has been cleared to continue campaigning in person.
Huntsman said Friday the campaign “will follow the instructions of health experts and not put politics and campaign concerns ahead of health and safety.”
During a May gubernatorial candidate forum, the first held in-person since the outbreak, Huntsman said he was sick but had received negative test results for COVID-19 shortly before the event.
