Utah doctor’s invention could save lives globally for years to come

When COVID-19 hit, a young Utah doctor and his friend began tinkering on nights and weekends to find innovative ways to help. They took a common item that vacationers use in the ocean and turned it into protective equipment for frontline healthcare workers. Even if we escaped getting sick from the coronavirus, we are all sick of staying at home, practicing social distancing and wearing masks. While case numbers and deaths from COVID-19 are trending downward, this is not the time to let down your guard. These are not ordinary days. These novel days call on us to make decisions with limited and evolving information. The coronavirus is still circulating. As a physician who has practiced for over 30 years, I find myself facing the decisions about safe outdoor recreation with some trepidation. The decision about whether to go to a beach, a pool or a park was previously pretty simple — now, not so much. On one hand, there is too much information, some of it conflicting and much of it infused with political ideology. On the other, there is a lack of information — the "novel" in novel coronavirus means it's new and there is much we don't know. While it remains as true as ever that there are tremendous benefits to going outside these days, it's also true there are risks to yourself and to others in doing so. — CNN

Live theater is changing in creative ways during pandemic

There are empty seats in the audience, which normally is not something a theater likes to see on opening night. But for this particular performance, the empty space is by design. Whole rows separate audience members from each other, and each of them are wearing face masks. When the actors come on stage, there is separation for them, as well — each actor stands on an individual platform to keep distance from their fellow performers. But as the show begins, the laughs and reactions from the audience are the same as any other pre-pandemic theater performance. This is a scene from the Parker Theatre (formerly the Utah Children’s Theatre) in Salt Lake City, which received a mention in the New York Times earlier this week for its socially distanced performance of “The Corona Conundrum,” which runs through June 6. Other measures that the theater has put in place include limiting the number of entrances and exits to the theater and limiting open restrooms in order to comply with social distancing requirements. — Associated Press

268 cases and no deaths Sunday in Utah

A day after the Utah Department of Health reported 546 new positive cases of COVID-19, Sunday's tally reveals new cases have dropped to 268. That brings Utah's total to 12,066 cases since the pandemic began. No new deaths were reported Sunday, keeping the state total at 121. The health department estimates that 7,108 Utahns have recovered from COVID-19. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Campaigning during COVID-19

Utah’s 4th Congressional District is one of the hottest races in the country. But with social distancing rules in place, candidates are looking to get creative by campaigning online to reach voters. For example, voters are getting to know State Representative Kim Coleman (R-West Jordan) on Facebook Live. Former KSL News Radio host Jay MacFarland is another Republican seeking this seat. He has been blending more traditional campaigning with campaigning online. Representative Ben McAdams, the incumbent and Utah’s only Democrat in Congress, said he’s more focused on helping constituents than campaigning. McAdams had to stop everything for over a week earlier this year when he ended up in the hospital with COVID-19. Back on the Republican side, businessman Trent Christensen has been texting 24-second videos of his campaign’s message to party delegates and voters, but he’s eager to get back out on the campaign trail. Political analyst and former football player Burgess Owens believes his high profile over many decades has helped him connect with Republican voters. But he also wants to be out there shaking hands again. — Kelli Pierce, KSL NewsRadio
