SALT LAKE CITY — Though Utah's overall positive test rate for COVID-19 remains around 5%, where it has hovered for the entire pandemic, the positive rate in the last week has been double that, health officials reported Monday.

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 256 from Sunday, with three new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Monday's totals give Utah 12,322 total confirmed cases, with 918 total hospitalizations and 124 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 12,066 cases in the state.

Over the past week, there have been 2,120 new cases reported for an average of 303 new cases per day, health officials report. During that time, there were just over 21,000 tests conducted, meaning that the positive test rate this past week has been about 10%, according to the health department.

For the week before that, from May 26 to June 1, there were 1,379, an average of 197 new cases per day. During that week, 19,520 tests were conducted, and the positive test rate was about 7.1%.

One of the deaths reported Monday was a woman from Salt Lake County who was over the age of 85, health officials reported. Another was a woman from Salt Lake County who was between the ages of 60 and 85. The third was a Davis County man who was between the ages of 60 and 85. All three were hospitalized when they died, according to the health department.

The new numbers indicate a 2.1% increase in positive cases since Sunday. Of the 242,899 tests conducted in Utah so far, 5.1% were positive for COVID-19. There were 4,948 tests conducted between Sunday and Monday.

Eighteen more people were hospitalized with COVID-19 from Sunday to Monday, and there are currently 112 people hospitalized with the disease in Utah, the health department reports.

The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began, including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease and those who have died.

The health department is estimating there are currently 4,943 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. An estimated 7,255 are considered recovered from the disease, according to health officials. Anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 three or more weeks ago and has not died is considered recovered.

There is no COVID-19 news conference expected Monday. Utah officials provide updates at news conferences once a week on Wednesdays.
