SALT LAKE CITY — Rain, sun, snow, sleet: We want to thank the people who bring us mail during the coronavirus pandemic. We need your help to do this.
The story of the U.S. Postal Service hearkens back to the late 1700s, when Benjamin Franklin became the first postmaster general. Shortly afterward, the Post Office Department was formed. The United States Postal Service became an independent agency in the 1970s.
The post office has hit some hard financial times with the outbreak of COVID-19. The service's losses have doubled, and on Friday its board of governors said it needs help from Congress to keep up its current service levels, according to Reuters.
Despite this hardship, these postal workers continue to show up, day after day, to make sure Utahns can send and receive mail and parcels and access their post office boxes.
