HEBER CITY — Two people were critically injured in a crash near Deer Creek Reservoir in Wasatch County, authorities said.

The crash occurred on Tuesday about 12:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 189, south of Wallsburg Junction on the southeast side of the reservoir, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

A pickup truck and car crashed head-on, according to UHP Sgt. Nick Street. Both drivers suffered critical injuries and were the only people in the vehicles, Street said.

The car, a Toyota Corolla, went was traveling south on the highway when it crossed through the center turn lane and drifted into oncoming traffic, UHP said in a news release.

The pickup truck, a Ford F250, drifted to the left to avoid a crash but collided with the Corolla, UHP said. The Corrola was pushed backward and ended up in the center turn lane of the highway.

The F250 went off the right side of the road and ended up on the shoulder. The driver of the Corolla was extricated by fire personnel and the driver of the F250 was partially ejected. Both were flown in medical helicopters to hospitals.

Investigators are not sure why the Corolla crossed over into oncoming traffic, the news release said.

Both directions of Highway 189 were briefly closed in the area, UDOT reported. As of 1:45 p.m., the highway had reopened the roadway and traffic was alternating in each direction, the agency said. Drivers in the area should expect delays.
