SALT LAKE CITY — A man and woman were “extremely” critically injured Sunday in separate motorcycle crashes in Utah, troopers said.

About 11 a.m., a group of motorcyclists was riding from Woodland, Summit County, to Hanna, Duchesne County, on state Route 35, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

West of Hanna, a sheepherder and two dogs were taking sheep to water, troopers said. As the motorcyclists approached the area, one of the dogs ran under a road guardrail and into the road in front of one of the drivers.

Seeing the dog, the driver “braked hard and skidded a significant distance before laying the bike down,” troopers said. The man was not wearing a helmet and suffered significant head injuries, according to the UHP. He was flown to a Salt Lake County hospital in “extremely critical” condition.

In the Utah County crash, a man and woman were riding east on U.S. 6 in Elberta about noon when the motorcycle drifted off the road, the Utah Highway Patrol said. In the area of the accident, the road gradually curves to the right. The speed limit is 60 mph.

Troopers said the motorcycle drove in the dirt off the road “for a significant distance,” went down an embankment and crashed into a fence.

The man, who was driving, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the woman was flown to a trauma center in “extremely critical” condition, according to Cox.

The woman had “significant injuries” to her arms, troopers said.

“Troopers are attempting to determine why the male rider went off the roadway and what caused the crash. The rider stated he was traveling near 70 mph, which was likely a contributor to the crash,” the UHP said in a statement.
