OGDEN — A 17-year-old Utah high school student died Saturday after the ATV he was riding crashed into a tree, officials said.
The crash took place at 12:24 p.m. in the 1000 block of Canfield Drive, according to a news release from Ogden police. When officers arrived on scene, they found that two 17-year-old boys had been ejected from the ATV, the release stated.
Juan Carlos Vazquez Ixtlahuaca suffered severe head injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.
The other boy had a hand injury and was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle, police said. He was not identified. Ogden Police Lt. Will Farr did not know where the two teens were from.
Investigators later discovered that the ATV driver had been riding through the neighborhood west on Canfield Drive, the release said. The driver lost control of the ATV on a turn, and the vehicle ran off the road and collided with a tree on the north side of the road, Farr said.
Neither of the teenagers was wearing a helmet, according to police.
Vazquez Ixtlahuaca was a student at Ben Lomond High and additional counselors were made available at the school Monday, Ogden School District spokesman Jer Bates said.
