WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution that would rename a Veterans Affairs facility after late North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor.

The bill would see the North Ogden Department of Veterans Affairs Outstation renamed the Major Brent Taylor Vet Center Outstation, according to a news release from the office of Utah Sen. Mike Lee.

Taylor, who was a major in Utah’s Army National Guard, was killed Nov. 3 while deployed in Afghanistan.

“In every aspect of his life, Major Taylor was a shining example of patriotism, sacrifice, and service,” Lee said from the Senate floor. “It is only right that we honor his extraordinary life.”

Taylor’s widow, Jennie Taylor, was invited to Washington, D.C. by Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, Tuesday for President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

Bishop has introduced similar legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would see the building renamed in honor of Brent Taylor.

“Brent Taylor lived an exemplary life,” Bishop said from the House floor Tuesday. “The naming of a building will never repay the debt our nation owes Mayor Taylor or his family, but it can stand as a humble reminder of the citizen soldier who lost his life in the service of others.”

Utah Sen. Mitt Romney also weighed in on Tuesday, saying Brent Taylor exemplified the best of Utah and the nation.

“Renaming the Ogden veterans center in his honor will serve as an enduring reminder of a patriot, loving family man, and beloved community leader who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation,” Romney said.
