SALT LAKE CITY — Three people who police say were drinking and decided to randomly rob people at gunpoint one night downtown now face felony charges.
Kira Smith, 18, of South Salt Lake, David Angel Montoya, 20, of Woods Cross, and Cameron Preston Dallas, 18, of Salt Lake City, each were charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with four counts of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.
On Jan. 24, the trio is accused of approaching four separate people and robbing them at gunpoint, according to charging documents. The incidents, according to police, included:
- A woman walking home from the grocery store was robbed of $50 worth of groceries at 10:15 p.m. at 25 S. 300 East.
- A man was robbed of his cellphone about 11 p.m. near 300 South and 500 East.
- A pedestrian was robbed of his backpack — with a laptop, external hard drive, textbook, cellphone and wallet inside — about 11:40 p.m. near 600 South and 1100.
- Later, at 220 E. 400 South, one of the defendants stopped a man walking to Dunkin' Donuts and asked for a cigarette, according to court records. When the victim said he didn't have one, the defendant "pulled out a black handgun, cocked it and pointed it at (the man's) head, telling him to empty his pockets or he would blow his brains out," charges state.
A short time later, the suspects' vehicle was spotted by Salt Lake police and pulled over at 360 S. State. The items that were allegedly stolen were found in the vehicle along with a "realistic looking BB gun made to resemble a Beretta pistol," according to charging documents.
Smith told police she was driving the two men because they had been drinking, and that Dallas and Montoya were "using the gun to make people give them money," charges state.
