SALT LAKE CITY — The John A. Moran Eye Center is recalling solar eclipse glasses after Amazon said it was unable to confirm they came from a reputable manufacturer.
The center was notified Sunday, along with buyers across the country, that Amazon is recalling a slew of solar eclipse glasses that were sold on its site due to possible safety concerns.
“Amazon has not received confirmation from the supplier of your order that they sourced the item from a recommended manufacturer. We recommend that you do not use this product to view the sun or the eclipse," the company said in an email to the Moran Center and other buyers.
Amazon has reached out to customers and provided refunds for eclipse glasses that may not comply with industry standards. In a statement to Oregon broadcaster KGW, Amazon said it made the decision out of "an abundance of caution." They also noted that customers who purchased glasses but did not receive a notification email purchased ones that were safe to use.
The Moran Eye Center is asking anyone who received a free pair of solar eclipse glasses from its organization to discard them unless they have the Clark Planetarium label. Anyone who purchased a pair for $1.50 from a Moran optical shop can return the glasses or their receipt to the location they purchased them from for a full refund, the center said.
Information on recommended solar eclipse glasses vendors can be found on nasa.gov.
