We have another warning today for drivers to be careful through construction on I-80 and for semis to avoid the road. Traffic was significantly affected this morning by what happened to one semi truck.
Around 4:15 this morning, a car hit a tire that came off a semi. The car then hit the freeway barrier, knocking the barrier out. Another car then hit the knocked out barrier. In all, four cars hit each other, the tire or the barrier.
Sgt. Kellie Oakes says the semi was long gone by then, but she wishes semi drivers would not drive there. "Vehicles are afraid to pass them. There are such narrow lanes. If semi truck drivers would just take I-215 East, we would sure appreciate that," she said.
It took close to four hours to close down the lanes, replace the barrier, move the cars involved in the crashes and get freeway traffic flowing again.
Meanwhile, the construction project will take a new step this coming weekend. UDOT will switch traffic to the newly finished north lanes in order to work on the south lanes of the expanding road.
