PLAIN CITY, Weber County — KayCee Hudman's 18th birthday had a harrowing start Wednesday, as she collided in her SUV with a dump truck on her way to school at Fremont High. 24 hours later, family members said on an update page created on Facebook that they were met with a surprising amount of community support.

"The overwhelming support for KayCee is amazing," a post read. "Thank you so much for everyone that has donated, shared, and offered to help. This means so much to our family."

Another post said that Hudman remained in critical but stable condition. She has some brain swelling and a broken arm, but family members said she can move her thumbs when asked.

Hudman was driving east on 2550 South Wednesday morning when she turned left to head north on 4700 West. Weber County Sheriff deputies said that's when she collided with the dump truck that was heading south.

Classmates and friends at Fremont High School grew concerned for Hudman Thursday.

"KayCee's a really open-hearted kind of girl," fellow senior Kinley Pixton said. "She's a strong girl. I think she'll pull through."

Another student said that multiple teachers allowed some class time to talk about Hudman and about how classmates were handling the news.

"It's scary," Shanay Madsen said. "My sister is upset, obviously, because they are extremely close. We kind of just are all hoping she pulls through."

Family members and friends in the meantime are organizing a fundraising event to help cover medical costs, set for June 24th. A Facebook page for the event says that they're currently looking for donated items and people who can prepare baked goods for a raffle. The family has an additional fundraising page* set up that at press time had raised just over $1,200.
