NEW YORK (AP) — Weather warnings are up for a powerful nor'easter that forecasters say could bring blizzard conditions and more than a foot of snow to some parts of the Northeast. Even the Washington, D.C. area is expecting its first significant snow of the season. Meteorologists say the storm could dump 12 to 18 inches of snow on New York City with wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Last week, temps were in the 60s.
BEIRUT (AP) — The United Nations' child relief agency reports today that 2016 was the worst yet for the country's rising generation, with at least 652 children killed in Syria's civil war. UNICEF says there was no letup to attacks on schools, hospitals, playgrounds, parks and homes as the Syrian government, its opponents and the allies of both sides showed callous disregard for the laws of war.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Jury selection is scheduled to begin today in the trial of a law enforcement officer charged with murder in a 6-year-old autistic boy's fatal shooting. Derrick Stafford is on trial for firing on a car during a November 2015 traffic stop in Marksville, Louisiana with another deputy city marshal. The shooting killed Jeremy Mardis and critically wounded his father. Police body camera video shows the father had his hands raised. The defense says Stafford feared for his life.
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Police say at least six people are dead at the hands of a suicide bomber in Somalia's capital. The explosion happened near a hotel in Mogadishu. Four other people were wounded. There's been no claim of responsibility for the blast. The al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist group al-Shabab has often targeted hotels in Mogadishu.
PREWITT, N.M. (AP) — Authorities in western New Mexico say a suspect is in custody in the shooting death of a Navajo Nation police officer. Officials say the incident on the nation's largest American Indian reservation critically wounded Navajo Nation Officer Houston James Largo, who died at a hospital several hours later. He had responded to a domestic dispute.
