HEBER CITY — Three people were killed in a head-on crash which closed both directions of U.S. Route 40 Tuesday morning, police said.
Around 7:20 a.m., a Honda driving from Park City to Heber City crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting a Kia head-on, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.
Police responded to the accident and pronounced the male driver of the Honda dead on scene. Two female passengers in the Honda were transported to a local hospital in critical condition and one died shortly after, police said.
The female driver of the Kia, believed to be from California, also died at a local hospital while her male passenger continues in critical condition, according to Royce.
The accident occurred near the Wasatch Commons Apartments in Heber City, and both directions of the highway were closed at River Road while the accident was investigated, though all lanes are now open, police say.
The cars crashed on a wide portion of road, so investigators are still trying to determine why one vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, though Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Harley Watkins says he believes speed was a factor.
Both vehicles were driving about 10 miles per hour over the speed limit when one swerved into oncoming traffic and hit the other, Watkins said.
The victims have not yet been identified, pending family notification.
More information will be released as it is received.
