LAYTON — Two men were arrested and one man died as a result of his injuries after a shooting in Layton Sunday night, police said.

The shooting occurred in a neighborhood near Chapel Street Park around 10:25 p.m., according to Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman. Police responded to the scene after receiving a call from a woman reporting that her friend had been shot at the park.

The 19-year-old victim, later identified as Bryan Brooks of Ogden, had arranged to meet two men with his girlfriend to buy marijuana, police said. Brooks and one of the men were discussing the purchase of drugs, when the two men attempted to rob Brooks, police said. During the struggle, one of the men got out of the vehicle, went to the passenger side window and shot Brooks once in the head, Lyman said.

The girlfriend drove to Main Street to get away from the gunman and called 911. Brooks was transported to University Hospital in critical condition and later died Monday morning from his injuries sustained in the shooting.

The two suspects split up after the shooting. Layton police searching the area found one at an apartment complex near the shooting. The other was arrested near Valley View Golf Course. Both were arrested without incident between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Monday, Lyman said.

Investigators believe the intent of the two men all along was to rob the victim.

Bostin Crookston, 19, of Layton, and Isaac Cain Lee Valdez, 18, of Layton, were arrested in connection with murder, obstruction of justice, and aggravated robbery. Crookston was also arrested for investigation of possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

Both Crookston and Valdez have lengthy juvenile records, Lyman said. In adult court, Valdez pleaded guilty to assault just five days earlier, according to court records. He was given a suspended six-month jail sentence and placed on probation, court records state.
